Are you focused on the right things?

Quite Women I saw the image above on the Quite Women Co Facebook page and I just had to share it on my page. It was a gentle reminder to me; a reminder of where I should place my focus. Then yesterday I was listening to a message by T.D Jakes and the theme of his message was in line with the words contained in the image. It inspired me to write this post.

Life is in seasons and there will definitely be times when things won’t go the way we want them to go. In such times, where do you place your focus? More often than not, we are tempted to focus on the wrong things; on the things that are not working. Imagine having a great financial need. It’s easy to overlook the fact that God sustains you even with the little that you have. Instead, you choose to focus on the fact that you don’t have the money you need in your bank account. When you focus in the wrong things, you fail to thank God for the things which are working well. You fail to thank Him for the little blessings.

Do you know that it’s the little blessings that usually usher in the big ones? One day when I was going to church, as I waited in Ojota bus-stop for the bus to be filled I started to lament in my mind’ “Lord you see why I need a car? I would have been in church by now if I was driving myself. Lord you just have to give me a car.” I went on and on and then God said to me, “Look outside. Are you not thankful that your standard of living is much better than some of these people walking on the streets? Are you not thankful that you have a place to call home and you eat three square meals every day?” I felt bad and I immediately began to thank God for all that I had. I even thanked Him that I could ride on a bus and go to church. Some people want to but they can’t.

It’s not the easiest thing to do; to focus on the things which are working but it’s the best thing to do. Focus on the goodness of God because the truth is, no matter how dark the night is God’s goodness will always shine through. There are months that I’ve been broke and God sustained me by His mercies. Let’s even take this month for example. There were so many things that I needed money for and I told myself that I would’t be able to afford to do certain things. Yet, I was able to do those things. I really can’t explain how. It is simply God’s goodness.

There was someone who shared a testimony at a house fellowship meeting last year. He said that although he didn’t have all the money he wanted he was grateful to God that there were no emergencies that would have required him to spend the little that he had. Not only that, throughout that particular month, he didn’t spend up to 30% of his ‘small’ salary. People kept blessing him with gifts.

If you look at your life right now, I am sure there are a few things which are working. Can you ignore the long list of things that are not working or the things you don’t have and thank God for those few things which are actually working? Can you thank God that you have life? Some people would like to be where you are right now. Thank God even when it seems you don’t have enough because He will make that little thing that you have to be sufficient for you. When you praise God for the little things, you give room for bigger things to show up. Adopt a lifestyle of gratitude.

If you haven’t thanked God today, now will be a good time to do so 🙂
