Writer Spotlight – Remi Roy starts off with the unlikely

Ms Unlikely by Remi Roy

Some months ago, two people contacted me to feature their new books on my blog. I had never received that kind of request before and I was open to the idea. I got to  know one of them better, Miss Remi Roy, and she sent me her book to read through. I was blown away by her talent. She is definitely going places. I will do a review of her debut novella, Ms Unlikely, next week so watch out for that.

Here is a short interview I did with Remi Roy. She is on my list of upcoming writers to watch out for in 2015.

For people who don’t know Remi Roy, can you briefly tell us about yourself?

My name is Remi Roy. I am a writer, author and media content professional. I have worked for magazines and a publishing firm in the past. I just finished the coolest Master’s programme on earth, published my first book and I’m looking forward to greater things. When I’m not writing I love to curl up with a good book or movie or spend time with the people I love.

remi roy...

What was growing up like for you?

I am the last of four children and I grew up in a small, very close knit family. We had what we needed and that was all that mattered. My mum is my hero. She actually fuelled my love for books.

When did your interest in writing begin?

I’d say when I started reading at a very young age. My mum would buy me books whenever she got a chance. Then I started writing silly poems in secondary school. But writing for me really started in 2008 when I got on Faithwriters.com. I got some good reviews and thought, “Wow! I can actually do this.”

What led you to write Ms. Unlikely?

I was looking for something to explore in my first book and I thought about my personal experiences. I haven’t always known what to do with my life. I grew up wanting to be a doctor, I ended up working in publishing. And I’m still figuring things out. So I thought, if I feel this way, my bet is I’m not alone. So I wrote this story about a young woman in search of meaning, fulfilment and, of course, love.

Is this the first book you’ve written?

Yes, this is my first book.

How long did it take you to complete Ms Unlikely?

About six months. But for many reasons, it took me even more time to publish it.

Remi Roy

In your journey to being a published author, what challenges did you face?

The decision to either self-publish or look for a traditional publisher was a difficult one. It didn’t take me long to decide however. I love working on projects and this was a very personal project. Also, finding reliable people to work with in the editing and design stages was a challenge. And finally marketing and promotions. It is a lot of work. But it’s rewarding work.

How did you feel when you held a copy of your published book for the first time?

Amazed. Grateful. Fulfilled. Ecstatic…

It is usually said that writers are generally introverts. Is this true?

I’d say most writers I have met are introverts. I guess because of the concentration and dedication the craft requires; which a lot of introverts seem to have tons of. But it’s not a general rule.

What do you love about writing?

The joy of being able to create something that others can enjoy.

There are people who don’t feel they can make a living out of writing. What are your thoughts about this?

Let’s face it, if you’re not Stephen King or Karen Kingsbury, it’s hard. You can make some money, pay some bills but it takes a lot more to get up there. So we keep those day jobs while we make our way up.

Outside of writing, what are your other interests?

Women and girls empowerment. It was the focus of my Master’s Thesis. I hope to do more in this space in the near future. As for hobbies I love puzzles. Jig saw puzzles. The 1000, 2000 pieces kind. I wear myself out working on them.

What should we expect from Remi Roy in the coming years?

For now, more books by God’s grace. I like to take life one day (or book) at a time.
