Be like fresh oil

Fresh Oil

It’s been such a hectic day. Actually this entire week has been hectic. So much work to get through. I didn’t think I would be able to put up a post today but here I am doing just that. I think I’m getting really attached to this blog. Is that a good thing? I hope it is.

Today I want to share a thought that came to me this morning while doing my routine social media update. Don’t you just love it when you have someone on your team that is so efficient that you can go to bed knowing that they’ll handle everything perfectly? I like to think of such people as oil. When you have them on your team, everything goes smoothly. They bring order to chaos. They take your vision, run with it and create something beautiful out of it. If they come on board a sinking ship, within a short time, they make that sheep sail again.

Such people are prized possessions. Unfortunately, they are scarce in this part of the world. Most people are often after their own agenda which is not necessarily a bad thing. It’s good to have your own goals and agenda but when you destroy someone else’s vision, I don’t see how that will help you achieve your own. People fail to realise that life comes with intertwined destinies. That person’s vision that you helped to build may just set you on the path to achieving your own dreams. I have heard too many stories of people who stayed with a company or person for a number of years and after working loyally with them, went off to start successful businesses. I doubt they would have been able to do so if they didn’t carry that other person’s vision as their own.

It’s sad when you have people on your team that want your ship to sink. I feel sorry for such people to be honest. What are they thinking; that after the ship sinks they will be in a better position to take the place of that ship? It rarely happens like that. If you have been part of a ship that sunk, it reflects on you one way or the other. I agree, when it comes to working for someone, there are certain things that are out of control but how are you handling those things that are within your control? When you are put on a project, is your boss’ mind at peace or does he begin to panic? Are you like the oil that makes a machine run smoothly or are you the loose bolt that causes everything to dismantle?

Choose to be the person that makes everything run smoothly. Give yourself a title ‘Chief Headache Reliever’ (PS – I just made that up). Relieve people’s stress and don’t add to it. If you find that you don’t like your job, instead of being nonchalant about your duties, tell yourself that you will remain a valuable team member until a better job comes your way. Don’t give yourself a bad name by being inefficient and incompetent. It may look like you’re being ripped off or taken for granted but that’s not an excuse to give less than your best. Besides, such things only last for a while. If you choose to remain resourceful, the world will be your oyster.

So be the oil, instead of a loose bolt.
